Gunpowder Green – Classic Chinese Green Tea

Gunpowder Green is one of China’s most recognizable green teas, known for its tightly rolled, pellet-like leaves. The name comes from the tea’s appearance: each leaf is rolled into a small dark nugget that resembles old-fashioned gunpowder. As the tea steeps, the leaves slowly unfurl, releasing a robust, satisfying brew.

The cup is fuller and more assertive than many lighter green teas, with a clean finish and subtle smoky notes. Its rolled shape gives the dry leaf a distinctive look and makes this tea especially enjoyable to watch as it brews.

Flavor Profile

Robust and clean with subtle smoke, mild vegetal notes, and a lightly brisk finish.

Brewing Instructions

8 oz Cup

  1. Scoop a heaping teaspoon of tea into infuser.
  2. Heat water to 180° - 190° F (before boiling).
  3. Pour 8 oz. of water over tea leaves.
  4. Steep tea for 3-5 minutes (depending on taste preference).
  5. Remove infuser and enjoy tea!

Potful

Simply add to your infuser one heaping teaspoon of leaf per 8 oz. of water and place it in your pot, then add the appropriate amount of 180° to 190° F water and let it steep for 3 to 5 minutes. Remove the infuser and enjoy.

Brewing Iced Tea

Our opinion is that a cooled concentrate works best, as regular-strength brew tends to become watery as the ice melts. So, use the above leaf quantities, but half the water, allow it to cool, then pour it over ice and enjoy! The brew will dilute down to proper strength as the ice melts.
